The Scenic Khadakwasla Dam near Pune

The Khadakwasla Dam is a popular tourist spot located just 20 km from Pune, Maharashtra. Built originally in the 19th century across the Mutha River, this dam forms the stunning Khadakwasla Lake. Both locals and tourists visit this peaceful destination set amidst lush greenery to relax and take in the natural beauty.

Khadakwasla Dam

A Little History

The Khadakwasla Dam was constructed between 1867 and 1879 under the supervision of British engineer Captain Fife. It was named Lake Fife after him though the name was changed to Khadakwasla post-independence. This masonry dam built on hard rock was one of the first of its kind in the world.

The original dam did not last too long. On July 12, 1961, the upstream Panshet Dam broke after extremely heavy rains leading to devastating floods in Pune. The swollen waters from Panshet caused the Khadakwasla Dam to breach as well, submerging many areas of the city. About 3000 soldiers worked desperately to delay the inevitable using sandbags but to no avail. The dam and lake were later rebuilt in the 1960s.
