As an avid beach lover, I'm always seeking out new sandy stretches to explore in India. During my recent trip down the Konkan coast in Maharashtra, I uncovered a real hidden gem - Tarkarli Beach.
Nestled along the coastline south of Goa, this pristine beach offered a tranquil slice of paradise with crystal clear waters, soft sands, beachside resorts, and delicious local seafood.
Locating this Beachside Beauty
Tarkarli Beach sits peacefully in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, about a 6-hour drive south of Goa. To reach it, I drove down the Mumbai-Goa highway to Kudal, before taking the coastal road heading towards Malvan. Passing several fishing villages and coconut groves along the way, I finally arrived at the sleepy beachside town of Tarkarli.

First Impressions - Swaying Palms and Sparkling Shores
My first glimpse of Tarkarli Beach evoked a real feeling of being on the island time. Swaying coconut palms lined the golden sands, which gave way to remarkably clear turquoise waters. The beach stretched uninterrupted for miles in both directions, with just a handful of beach shacks and small resorts dotted along it.
I kicked off my shoes and stepped onto the powder-soft sand, strolling down to the shoreline taking in the postcard-worthy views. This was coastal paradise at its finest.
Hitting the Waters - Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Galore
I didn't waste any time jumping into the bathtub-warm waters to discover Tarkarli's real claim to fame - its underwater life. This coastal stretch is renowned as one of the top spots for scuba diving and snorkeling in India. I spent an afternoon scuba diving and was blown away by the vibrant coral reefs and colorful tropical fish just below the surface.
The excellent visibility let me take in this magical marine world in fine detail. Back on shore, I also made sure to enjoy the beach's famously clear shallow waters with some relaxed snorkeling.
Tucking into Delicious Local Seafood
All that swimming and beachside relaxation worked up quite an appetite! Luckily, Tarkarli's beach shacks serve up the freshest catch of the day straight from the Arabian Sea.
I feasted on spicy fish curries, stuffed clams, and crisp fried prawns as I watched the sunset over the waves. Washed down with a chilled beer, it was the perfect end to a day in paradise.
Exploring South to Devbagh Beach
After a peaceful night's sleep at one of Tarkarli's beach cottages, I decided to explore further by walking 3km south down the beach to Devbagh. Here I found a semi-private cove, fringed by casuarina pine trees.
The talcum powder sand and translucent waters reminded me of an idyllic desert island. I whiled away hours swimming here with barely another soul around. Absolute bliss.

Off the Beaten Path Authenticity
While more famous beaches along the Konkan Coast and in Goa attract heavier crowds, Tarkarli has retained a peaceful, off-the-radar vibe. Being a bit more challenging to reach by public transport has allowed it to avoid the trap of overcommercialization.
The handful of family-run resorts and casual beach shacks lend an authentic local charm. It was so refreshing to discover this hidden corner of India's coastline, knowing I was well ahead of the tourist hordes.
The Challenges - Isolated Location
However, Tarkarli's remoteness does pose a few challenges for visitors. The nearest rail connection is 60km away at Kudal so the only way to reach Tarkarli is by road. Limited local transport can also make it difficult to explore without your own vehicle or hired car and driver.
As tourism infrastructure is still developing here, accommodation options are quite basic and limited as well - don't expect 5-star resorts! But for me, it was a small price to pay for a lovely laid-back vibe.
Glimpsing Tarkarli's Future
While I loved having Tarkarli largely to myself, the word is starting to spread about this little coastal paradise. Several high-end hotels are currently under construction, no doubt aiming to attract more upmarket tourism. I do worry about what the impact might be on Tarkarli's pristine environment and local way of life.
Hopefully, sustainable development practices will be embraced to retain their natural charm.
Time Your Trip Right
If venturing well off the beaten path to uncover hidden beach gems appeals to you, I highly recommend adding Tarkarli to your India travel wishlist. Visit now before larger hotels and crowds start to appear! October to March is the best time to visit when the weather is mild and ideal for swimming. I know I'll certainly be returning on my next beach holiday.
